What the tool does

The PDF is rewritten entirely in your browser: nothing is sent to any server. The tool re-saves the document using compressed object streams, strips optional metadata (title, author, producer, XMP metadata, application-private data, page thumbnails) and drops the dead objects left behind by successive saves from Word or Acrobat.

Text, fonts, links and layout are preserved exactly. You can drop several files at once; they are processed one after the other, and the tool shows the size before and after for each.

Limits

Embedded images are neither resampled nor re-encoded: a PDF made of scans or photos will barely shrink, and the tool says so whenever the saving is below 5%. Typical savings range from a few percent on a clean file to much more on a file that was saved many times.

To make an image-heavy document truly lighter, compress the images first with the “Compress an image” tool, then build the PDF. Password-protected PDFs are refused.
